Tuesday Earthquake
Tibet experienced significant seismic activity this week, with eight earthquakes recorded in just 10 hours on January 7, with the first tremor occurring at 1:54am. Continuous seismic activity has been observed in Tibet, particularly in the Lhasa block, which has experienced more than 20 earthquakes over the past 75 years. The China Earthquake Network Centre (CENC) attributed Tuesday’s quakes to the northward pressure from the Indian Ocean plate and the crustal movements of tectonic plates.
Local officials confirmed that a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, on January 7, Tuesday, at 9:05am (Beijing time). The epicentre was located in Tsogo Township, in the southern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, affecting approximately 6,900 people within a 20-km radius. The quake tragically claimed 126 lives and injured 188 others.
