PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma endured a horrific injury during his side’s Ligue 1 fixture against Monaco earlier this week. Donnarumma suffered a facial injury after he was accidentally caught in a challenge with Monaco’s defender Wilfried Singo. The Ivorian, who was earlier booked in the fixture, was not handed any punishment for the incident. Donnarumma argued with the referee Francois Letexier at half-time as Singo was not booked for the dangerous collision. The incident took place in the 22nd minute. Having come out to challenge Singo, the PSG shot-stopper ended up taking a boot to the face as the Monaco defender vied for the ball. The clash left Donnarumma with several cuts on the side of his head and he had to be taken off the field. A report published by RMC Sport claimed that Donnarumma required 10 staples to treat the deep cuts.
Later, Singo apologised to Gianluigi Donnarumma, saying, as per BBC, “My gesture was obviously not intentional but I was able to see afterwards that he had a significant injury to his face.” The article published by BBC claimed that Singo and Donnarumma had a word with each other following the Ligue 1 game and the Italian was able to return to Paris along with his PSG teammates.
PSG shared an update on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s condition stating that the goalkeeper suffered “facial trauma” with several wounds. “Victim of facial trauma with multiple wounds, Gianluigi Donnarumma will return to Paris with the team. He will undergo medical examinations and will have to remain inactive for several days,” read the statement shared by the Paris giants on their official website.
Matvey Safonov was brought onto the pitch to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite Donnarumma’s absence, PSG went on to clinch a convincing 2-4 win against Monaco. PSG scripted a memorable comeback from being down 2-1 to clinch a win. Ousmane Dembele scored a brace to guide PSG to a resounding win. Desire Doue and Goncalo Ramos netted a goal each for PSG against Monaco.
The win helped PSG increase their lead at the top of the Ligue 1 standings. They are currently 10 points ahead of second-placed Marseille and third-placed Monaco. Gianluigi Donnarumma will probably miss out on PSG’s next fixture in the French Cup against Lens on Sunday.
