Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney gave his honest review of the current crop of the fabled Premier League side, which is languishing in the 14th spot in the English top flight. United have been subpar in terms of quality, showing and results in the ongoing campaign and the same is reflected in the points tally.

The club’s all-time top scorer, Rooney, expressed he does not see the current unit turning things around as the Red Devils look for a long-awaited resurgence under head coach Ruben Amorim.

“No, I don’t think so,” Rooney said when quizzed if he could envisage a turnaround as things stand.

“They look lost. I think they look scared and just scared to make a mistake,” the English icon revealed.

United have been underwhelming as a unit, with midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo being the only silver linings in the dark cloud the Mancunian side seems to be engulfed by. Rooney also voiced that the squad needs perking up, considering the situation the once-storied club finds itself in.

“I do think Bruno Fernandes is the one who keeps producing. He annoys you at times as well, but he’s the one who keeps producing,” the 39-year-old said.

“But it needs massive changes to the squad. I think 10 to 15 players need to leave the club,” he opined.

Rooney also took into account the economic feasibility that might not permit an absolute overhaul of the side, but called for the players to take responsibility to begin a journey that could end with the club regaining their old glory.

“Obviously, they can’t do that, but I think there is a mentality there where it’s not going right. This player will pass it on to him, he’ll pass it on to him and no one is taking responsibility,” Rooney said.

Rooney rubbished the culture around the club as he feels it has become acceptable for players to produce underperforming showing and move onto the next one looking for a better result without having addressed the core issues.

“I think there is just a culture there now where it’s too easy for them to lose games and then you see them coming out (with), ‘on to the next one’ and all this rubbish.

“You’re like ‘just show it on the pitch — show some character and fight on the pitch,’ the former United striker said.

“It’s bad watching, it hurts. Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at Man United, I want the club to do well. I’ve got my kids in the academy there — and watching it, it hurts,” he said.
