Republicans today will look to build on their stunning election success by inching towards taking control of the House of Representatives as races across America hang in the balance.

The GOP needs 10 more seats to secure a majority in the lower chamber after already taking the Senate to give Donald Trump an early boost ahead of his incoming presidency.

However, with 19 results yet to be determined, the Democrats will be desperately hoping to win more seats to ensure President-elect Trump does not have unchecked power when he is sworn into office next year.

What Trump could do with a Republican clean sweep

If Republicans win back the House, they would control the legislative, executive, and the judicial branches of the federal government fully during Trump’s first years in office, giving him sweeping control after he was voted out just four years ago.

Republicans may also take more robust action against transgender issues involving schools and sports, which Trump and the GOP have spoken about often on the campaign trails.

Already with control of the Senate Republicans will be able to dictate approvals of federal judges and cabinet positions like Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense.

If a Supreme Court vacancy arrises, the Senate handles that, too.

During Trump’s last presidency the Senate was controlled by the GOP, and the former president was able to help appoint three of the court’s nine sitting justices – which has had a major impact on the ideological slant of the body.

Republican supermajority could soon sweep Washington

Though Republicans have been named the winners of the White House and Senate, some races in the House of Representatives may take days if not weeks to call.

The GOP also gained control over the Senate after flipping multiple seats red, with some races still yet to be finalized and pick-up opportunities still on the table.

Republicans now need to maintain control over the House to have a full supermajority in Washington, D.C., which would have major consequences for Democrats.
