A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Mediterranean coastal town of Marmaris in Turkey early on Tuesday, injuring at least seven people who tried to flee their homes in panic, officials said.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the earthquake hit at 2:17 a.m. local time and was centred in the Mediterranean Sea.

“There is currently no negative situation following the 5.8 magnitude #deprem earthquake that occurred at 02:17 off the coast of Marmaris, Muğla, Mediterranean and was felt in the provinces of Muğla, Aydın, Denizli, Manisa and İzmir. Field scanning work continues,” Turkey’s AFAD updated in a post on X.

Around the same time, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the Dodecanese Islands region of Greece, near the Turkish border. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that this quake occurred at a depth of 68 kilometres.

Marmaris Governor Idris Akbiyik told Turkish media that the injuries happened when people jumped from windows and balconies in fear, and confirmed that there was no immediate report of any serious damage.

Turkey’s Environment Minister Murat Kurum also addressed the situation in a post on X. ” I would like to extend my best wishes to all our citizens for a speedy recovery due to the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the Mediterranean coast and was felt primarily in Muğla and the surrounding provinces. Although there is no negative situation at the moment, our teams have started field scanning work. May God protect our country and our nation from all kinds of disasters.” he wrote.

Turkey lies on several major fault lines and experiences frequent earthquakes. The country is still recovering from the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2023, which killed over 53,000 people and damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings across 11 provinces in the south and southeast. In neighbouring Syria, around 6,000 people also lost their lives in that disaster.
