According to a report published in the medical journal The Lancet, a study conducted since 2022 has revealed that the number of cancer-related deaths in India per 1 lakh people is projected to rise from 64.7 to approximately 109.6. By 2050, this figure is expected to exceed alarming levels. (News18 Bengali)

The incidence of cancer cases is steadily rising, and so is the mortality rate. A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) suggests that three out of every five cancer patients succumb to the disease. (News18 Bengali)

As per The Lancet, India ranks third globally in terms of the number of cancer patients. Interestingly, a study published by the National Library of Medicine reveals that five common foods may help prevent cancer. Wondering what they are? Take a look… (News18 Bengali)

Apple: Apples contain a compound called polyphenols, known for their anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown that polyphenols play a key role in preventing inflammation, heart disease, and infections. According to the National Library of Medicine, a specific polyphenol in apples, called phloretin, can inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells, without affecting healthy cells. Phloretin blocks a protein known as glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), which is linked to cell growth in the advanced stages of certain cancers. (News18 Bengali)

Broccoli: Broccoli contains sulforaphane, a compound known to help prevent cancer. Research has shown that sulforaphane can reduce the size and number of breast cancer cells and slow the growth of prostate cancer cells. Moreover, increased consumption of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli has been associated with a reduced risk of colon and rectal cancers. (News18 Bengali)

Fatty Fish: Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and anchovies are rich in vitamin B, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Research has demonstrated that omega-3s may reduce the risk of breast cancer, particularly among Asian populations. A 2022 meta-analysis also found a correlation between fish consumption and a decreased risk of colorectal cancer. (News18 Bengali)

Carrots: Multiple studies indicate that carrots may help lower the risk of stomach, prostate, and lung cancers. In one study, researchers analysed participants’ dietary habits and found that smokers who did not eat carrots were three times more likely to develop lung cancer than those who did. Grapes: The skin of grapes contains resveratrol, an antioxidant with cancer-fighting properties. Some scientists believe that with further study, resveratrol could become an important component in future cancer therapies. Grapes and their seeds are rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, anthocyanins (especially in red and purple grapes), proanthocyanidins, and catechins—all antioxidants known for their anti-cancer effects.
