As soon as December arrives, the severe cold begins. The cold season also brings with it many health problems. During the winter season, special care should be taken by not only children but also the elderly and pregnant women. It is especially important for pregnant women to take extra care.
Dr Priyanka Suhag, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, explains how pregnant women should care for their health during the winter months.
Pregnant women should keep these things in mind during winters:
- The risk of catching a cold or flu is higher during this season. Therefore, it is important to get vaccinated for the well-being of both mother and child, as well as to prevent seasonal diseases like the flu.
- Include nutrients rich in vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc in your diet and maintain a balanced diet such as hot soups, seasonal vegetables, oranges, and other fruits. This will strengthen your immunity.
- Dry air in winter can cause dehydration. It is essential to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated.
- Pay attention to the clothes you wear. Choose layered clothing to adapt to both indoor and outdoor temperatures. If you are pregnant during winter, buy maternity wear that includes warm tops, stretchy leggings, and non-slip footwear. This will help protect you from the cold.
- Dry air often causes nasal congestion. Consider using a humidifier. Also, invest in soft bedding and comfortable clothes for your newborn.
- Prepare a hospital bag for winter delivery, including sweaters, socks, and blankets for both mother and baby. Do not forget to pack a thermos for hot drinks, moisturising lip balm, comfortable slippers, necessary documents, toiletries, and post-delivery care items.
- Try simple exercises like stretching or prenatal yoga at home to improve blood circulation and reduce stiffness due to the cold weather.
It is very important for pregnant women to take care of their health during the winter. Stay alert to diseases such as colds or flu and consult a doctor immediately if you feel unwell.
