INDIAN NAVY DAY 2024: Every year, December 4th serves as a reminder of the extraordinary bravery displayed by the Indian Navy during one of the most pivotal moments in India’s history. The day commemorates the success of Operation Trident, a naval operation during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War that highlighted the might and precision of the Indian Navy. It’s not just a day to celebrate victory; it’s an occasion to recognise the sacrifices and relentless efforts of our naval forces that have safeguarded the nation.
Indian Navy Day History
The roots of Navy Day lie in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 when Pakistan launched a surprise attack on Indian air bases on December 3. The following night, December 4, the Indian Navy orchestrated Operation Trident against Pakistan’s Karachi Naval Headquarters.
Using three missile boats—INS Veer, INS Nipat, and INS Nirghat—alongside Vidyut-class boats, the Navy inflicted significant damage, sinking three Pakistani naval ships, including the PNS Khaibar.
Hundreds of enemy personnel were lost, and Commodore Kasargod Pattana Shetty Gopal Rao’s leadership stood as a testament to Indian maritime strength.
To honour this victory and the lives sacrificed during the mission, Navy Day has since been celebrated on December 4. It serves as a tribute to the Navy’s pivotal role in safeguarding India’s waters and as an opportunity to raise awareness about its contributions.
