Her 1980 breakout role in what’s considered one of the funniest parody films of all time helped launch her career as a beloved comedy actress in the 80s and 90s.
The cult classic, starring Robert Hays, saw her show off her acting chops and impeccable comedic timing as naïve but fearless flight attendant Elaine Dickinson, a part she would reprise in the sequel two years later following the movie’s success.
From then on, her unique, offbeat charm would continue to captivate audiences through her portrayal of quirky, endearing characters in subsequent comedy films such as 1985’s Lost in America and What about Bob? in 1991.
Nowadays the veteran actress mostly appears in smaller roles in television series and films.
Her supporting part in 2019 drama Marriage Story, however, was powerful enough to draw critical acclaim that year.

Hagerty, who was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, became an overnight star with her hilarious portrayal in 1980 comedy film Airplane! starring Robert Hays.
The movie follows Hagerty’s flight attendant character as she becomes involved in absurd and ridiculous events throughout the flight.
At the time of its premiere Hagerty was still an up-and-coming actress who began her acting career in off-Broadway productions.

She landed her first film role in 1979 musical drama film, All That Jazz, only for her part to be cut from the final edit.
Speaking to Closer Weekly in 2019, she revealed she was living in a tiny apartment with a friend and had been working odd jobs to make ends meet as she waited for Airplane’s release.
‘I came back to New York and I was babysitting for money until the movie came out,’ she said.
‘I went to the opening on a pair of crutches, because the baby broke a little glass and I stepped on it and had stitches on my foot.’

Hagerty is best known for her comedic timing and portrayal of quirky characters but received critical acclaim for her supporting role in 2019 drama Marriage Story
‘We were sharing the apartment illegally because the rent was so low, but if the sink broke we had to do the dishes in the tub! So you’re in this big movie and then this, but it keeps everything in a very good perspective.’
Hagerty has been married twice and has been with her second husband Richard Kagan since 1999. They have no children.
