Liverpool are keen to sign a new five-year contract with Trent Alexander Arnold but the weekly wages have reportedly become a stumbling block. As per his present deal, Arnold earns £180,000 per week. As per a report by the Sun, the Liverpool hierarchy has offered him a £70,000 raise. The English full-back, however, hopes to get a better hike to match the weekly salary of his Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah which currently stands at £350,000. It means the club authority has fallen nearly “£100,000 short” of convincing Alexander-Arnold to stay at Anfield, the Sun report claimed.

Alexander-Arnold’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire next summer. Real Madrid are reportedly interested in taking him on board. The 26-year-old, however, wants to continue playing in England, as revealed by his close friends.

At present, Arnold is settled at a £5-million mansion in Cheshire. He has also started dating an English model Estelle Behnke, which could also be a reason for him to stay in his homeland, the Sun understands.

Arnold has so far been tight-lipped about his future at Liverpool. When asked about the possibility of signing a contract extension, he said in an interview with Sky Sports, “I have been at the club 20 years and I have signed four or five contract extensions. None of those have been played out in public. This one won’t be either.”

Amid all this, a report by Marca recently claimed that Arnold rejected three contract renewal offers from Liverpool. The club, however, remains optimistic about convincing him to stay. They have also spoken to Real Madrid’s director Jose Angel Sanchez to confirm their interest. The Spanish club reportedly gave a positive response but Liverpool might not sell players in the upcoming January transfer window.

Former Liverpool star Michael Owen has shared his view. Back in 2004, the legendary forward left Liverpool to join Real Madrid. He wanted to return to his old club but never found the opportunity again. Referring to his situation, Owen said, “I couldn’t have been so happy and so in love, loyal, and everything else to a club, but things do change.”

“As I say, you can lose control, and once you move once, it’s almost then you’re out there on the open market and it can be a strange feeling and a strange place to be when you’re not where you feel like you belong,” he added.

Apart from Arnold, Liverpool also need to decide the future of Virgil van Dijk and Salah. The club has already offered a new contract to Van Dijk but Salah might consider shifting his base to Saudi Arabia, ending an eight-year spell.
