To break a pot (Handi) full of curd (Dahi), participants must create a human pyramid. This day represents as a remembrance of Lord Krishna’s playful and mischievous personality.

Why is Dahi Handi celebrated?

The reason behind celebrating Dahi Handi is to remember Lord Krishna’s youthful adventures where lord Krishna and his friends would build human pyramids to steal butter or curd from pots that used to be hung high in the Gopis’ homes.

When is the Dahi Handi celebration done?

Dahi Handi is celebrated on Gokulashtami, which commemorates Lord Krishna’s birth. This day usually falls one day after the Krishna Janmashtami that usually occurrs in August.

How is Dahi Handi held?

A pot containing curd, butter, fruits, and occasionally cash is hung at a considerable height during Dahi Handi celebrations. Groups of young men known as Govindas construct human pyramids in order to get to the Handi and break it.
