Android 16 will be rolling out earlier than usual in 2025 as Google prepares to bring the new Pixel 10 series.
Google has released the Android 16 Developer Preview 2 (DP2), which enables the testing of new features and application programming interfaces (APIs). The most recent update is supposed to improve battery life in addition to enhancing the capabilities that were first seen in the first preview last month. Additionally, it comes with a brand-new functionality that is only available on Pixel devices. Once the fingerprint unlocks sensor is available, Pixel owners will be able to utilise it even while the screen is off.
The Android 16 Developer Preview 2 introduces a new setting called Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock, citing a report by the Android Authority. Currently, the in-display fingerprint sensor requires the screen of the phone to be awake in order to function. Although there isn’t a direct way to activate it, there are some workarounds, such as turning on the always-on display or tapping to wake.
But the new feature in Android 16 DP2 may alter that. It may be turned on to use fingerprint unlock even while the screen is off, according to its description.
According to reports, the feature was found on the Google Pixel 9 Pro under Settings > Security & privacy > Device Unlock> Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. It is only compatible with gadgets that have an ultrasonic fingerprint reader built into the display; reports add.
Meanwhile, the Android Authority verifies that older Pixel devices running Android 16 DP2, which lack the previously mentioned fingerprint sensor, were unable to use the Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock feature.
Additionally, Google affirms that battery life is improved by its most recent Android 16 release. According to the official changelog, it minimises incompatibilities and improves performance, battery life, and the app experience.
Moreover, Google claims that the adjustable refresh rate feature, which was first available in Android 15, is made easier for apps to use in Android 16 DP2. The restoration of an old API and the introduction of two new ones make this possible. With new haptic APIs, it is also said to provide richer haptics. Applications will be able to specify the frequency and amplitude curves of a haptic effect regardless of variations brought about by device capabilities.
