Arsenal have completed their first deal in the January transfer window. The Gunners have shown the exit door to Josh Robinson who has joined Wigan Athletic, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract. A product of the Hale End Academy, Robinson has played for the England national team at the youth level. The 20-year-old has made no appearances for the Arsenal senior team. Mikel Arteta, however, kept Robinson on the bench during four of their six Champions League fixtures this season. He has featured in three EFL Trophy matches and struck a goal against Leyton Orient.

Robinson is excited to start a new journey with Wigan Athleticwhoremain sixteenth in the current League One standings. “It’s a very big football club, and I am looking forward to seeing what the season holds. They were interested in me and when you see a big club like Wigan, you cannot turn that opportunity down,” Robinson said after the deal was finalised.

“I’ve been at Arsenal for a long time, and coming out of the academy into a first-team environment is a big step but I feel like I am ready to take it.“It’s a big decision – but I thought why not take the leap of faith and hopefully, everything will go well. I am very excited to get going,” the young defender added.

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney was also happy to have Robinson on board. He shared that the club had been “monitoring Robinson for quite some time”. “Josh is both excited and motivated about our vision for the Club in the coming seasons. He is an extremely dedicated defender who excels in one-on-one situations and possesses strengths in attacking areas as well,” Maloney said.

Wigan’s Sporting Director, Gregor Rioch, expressed gratitude to the Arsenal hierarchy for their cooperation. He also showed his faith in Robinson, saying, “He is a talented defender, who we believe has great potential for the future.”

Apart from being a central defender, Robinson can also play right-back and his versatility will no doubt benefit Wigan. He is likely to make his debut in the League One game against Birmingham City on January 4.
