Former WWE head writer Vince Russo has questioned why Cody Rhodes was not chasing after Kevin Owens on the latest SmackDown episode. The January 3 episode of SmackDown saw Rhodes getting blindsided by Owens amid a distraction from Drew McIntyre. Reviewing the segment for BroDown on Backstage Pass, Russo could not understand WWE’s logic behind such a storyline approach. “You open up the show, you got the Cody Rhodes in the ring, then here comes Drew and Cody is attacked from behind by Owens. Yeah, why isn’t Cody hunting down Owens the entire show?” he wrote, as per SportsKeeda.

Cody Rhodes only recently defended his Undisputed Championship against Kevin Owens during Saturday Night Main Event. The premium live event was hosted at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, New York on December 14 last year. The American Nightmare engaged in a thrilling match with Owens who was eventually knocked out, leading to a successful title defence. Once the show went off the air, reports suggested that Rhodes was brutalised by Owens. The former WWE Champion reportedly hit Rhodes with a Package Piledriver before running off with the title.

Glimpses of the assault’s aftermath were shared on X (formerly Twitter). In the photograph, Cody Rhodes could be seen being stretchered out of the arena. “Kevin Owens hit a Package Piledriver on Cody Rhodes following WWESNME and ran off with the world title,” read the post.

Given what occurred between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens the last time they stood face-to-face, Vince Russo hoped to see the American Nightmare hunting down his attacker on SmackDown. “I’d rather see Cody hunting down Owens. Cody finding Owens either outside, either up in a balcony somewhere in the building and and seeing a brawl and seeing Kevin Owens leave with heat rather than see a 20 minute wrestling match,” he said. “Never, never would Austin have been jumped from behind and not not go hunting, ever,” Russo added.

On the latest episode of SmackDown, Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens engaged in another brawl after the Undisputed Champion was blindsided. Several officials arrived at the scene to separate the two WWE stars from going at each other. They are next set to square off in a ladder match at the upcoming premium live event WWE Royal Rumble 2025. The upcoming bout could be Owens’ last shot at the Undisputed Championship.
