Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat Bengaluru FC 1-0 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday.

Liston Colaco’s stunning strike was the difference between the sides as the Mariners further consolidated their place at the top of the points table.

Mohun Bagan unveiled the world’s largest hand-painted tifo ahead of the start of the match.

When the game got underway, it was a frantic affair. Tough tackles and close markings dominated the initial exchanges.

Apuia was the first to go into the referee’s book but it was Bengaluru who got the first few sighters at goal. Edgar Mendes, Sunil Chhetri and Alberto Noguera came close but Mohun Bagan survived. The home side could not break free from Bengaluru’s high-press.

Subhasish Bose too saw yellow before the water-break as Bengaluru had more of the ball and Mohun Bagan looked clueless out of possession.

Out of the blue, around the 37th-minute mark, Greg Stewart turned on the charm for Mohun Bagan. Bengaluru though somehow survived. Jamie Mclaren, Manvir and even Liston Colaco could not put the ball in the net.

Chhetri had the best chance to put the away ahead in stoppage time, going past Manvir and Alberto Rodriquez but ended up placing the ball on the wrong side of the post.

The first half ended how it began. Breathless and erratic but eventually goalless.

It was more of the same after the restart with the roles reversed.

Mohun Bagan opted to keep the ball more and invited pressure from Bengaluru. Mistakes in front of goal notwithstanding, it was Bengaluru who managed to work Vishal Kaith. Edgar Mendes had a headed effort tipped over the crossbar as Ryan Williams’s shot after cutting in from the right was straight at the keeper. Liston and Tom Aldred too had chances but failed to convert.

Jose Molina had been looking over to the substitutes for some time and finally decided to call over Ashique Kuruniyan and Jason Cummings. Liston may have spotted moved behind him on the touchline as he raced into the box. The ball went to Stewart on the left flank and he curled another cross in as Rahul Bheke stood tall to head away danger. It wasn’t far enough. Liston was waiting at the edge of the box and almost without thinking or invitation, slashed his right foot and the ball flew off his boot, past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and into the back of the net in the 74th minute.

Just like clockwork, the Mariners irrupted in the stands. Liston ran over the fans and celebrated by taking off his shirt in pure jubilation. The bench too high-fived in unison.

As the referee called for the water break, Molina replaced a beaming Liston for Ashique as Stewart too made way for Cummings.

Bengaluru FC’s response was passed around the backline and that too at a pedestrian rate. In added time after 90, Bheke had a golden chance to head his side level from a Williams corner but his effort flew harmlessly over the crossbar.

In the end, the game too ended how it began. Breathless and erratic Mohun Bagan edged out Bengaluru FC by a solitary goal.
