On May 5, 2025, the Met Gala—the most-awaited night in the fashion Universe—will return to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In keeping with the Costume Institute’s exhibit ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ this year’s theme, ‘Tailored for You,’ promises a gala that seamlessly blends fashion, history, and cultural influence. The display explores the development of black menswear from 18th-century Europe to its contemporary influence world, using inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion.
A Dress Code Rooted in Legacy
The ‘Superfine’ exhibit will explore the origins of dandyism, a fashion movement that originated in 18th-century Europe and saw Black men reinvent self-expression via tailored elegance. It was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The word ‘dandy,’ which is frequently connected to men who are committed to wearing elegant clothing, became a way for Black people to create their own identities outside of social norms.
‘Tailored for You,’ the dress code for the 2025 Met Gala, calls on attendees to celebrate and interpret this illustrious heritage of artistry, precision, and uniqueness. The red carpet will serve as a platform for bold takes on traditional menswear, ranging from well-tailored suits to avant-garde costumes.
