Deadline for LIV golfers to commit league’s future pushed back as initial $300 million in funding put in place

Players sitting on the fence contemplating whether or not to commit to LIV Golf’s future will be allowed to sit a bit longer.

LIV Golf officially extended the deadline for players to commit to the league, moving the date from Oct. 13 to Oct. 25, on the heels of BC Partners making its initial investment in “LIV 2.0” with a target of $300 million to bring the circuit out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy in September after the Saudi Public Investment Fund – the sole funder of the league since its inception in 2022 – made the decision to withdraw all financial support at the end of the 2026 season. The Saudis had spent $5 billion to fund the league before shutting off the financial spigot.

While the future of LIV Golf remains up in the air, BC Partners making its financial commitment two days before hearings related to the league’s bankruptcy filing begin can only be considered a step in the right direction.

The financial commitment and funding from BC Partners now require bankruptcy approval, and if it is achieved, LIV would then move forward with building out a 2027 season, which would include a 10-tournament schedule with half of the events taking place internationally.

We want the players who make this league what it is to share in what they help build,” Ted Goldthorpe, partner and head of BC Partners Credit, said in a statement. “Giving players real and actionable ownership in the league and the teams is a unique opportunity in professional golf, and it aligns everyone around the long-term success of the product for the game and for the fans.”

It was announced in August that players competing on the next iteration of LIV Golf would hold a majority of equity, with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil explaining the league will be “driven by and for the players.”

The most notable players still associated with LIV Golf include Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, and Tyrrell Hatton.

It is understood that, given LIV’s bankruptcy and restructuring, players could be released from any existing contracts with the circuit, meaning they could then look at other opportunities. At the moment, the PGA Tour is not providing any sort of straightforward path for players who previously defected to LIV.
