A traveler’s arrival at a Florida airport took an unusual turn after customs officers noticed something suspicious during an inspection.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Miami International Airport spotted what court documents described as an “unexplained bulge” around a passenger’s waist and pelvic area after he arrived on a flight from Havana, Cuba, according to a federal complaint obtained by Fox News Digital.

A closer inspection allegedly uncovered 10 live birds concealed beneath the traveler’s clothing, the complaint said.

Alberto Hernandez Castillo, a native of Cuba and legal permanent resident of the United States, arrived in Miami on Oct. 4.

CBP officers selected him for a secondary inspection.

Castillo signed a customs declaration indicating he was not bringing animals or wildlife into the United States, according to court documents.

Officers first searched a carry-on bag and fanny pack belonging to Castillo but did not find any contraband.

During routine questioning about his trip, officers noticed the bulge beneath his clothing and said Castillo “appeared nervous” — prompting them to conduct a pat-down.

The search allegedly revealed six clear cylindrical containers holding live birds.

The containers were wrapped in tape and tucked inside black pockets sewn into his underwear, according to the complaint.

Officers recovered 10 birds from the containers, which were preliminarily identified as eight yellow-faced grassquits and two blue grosbeaks, court documents said.

Photos included in the complaint show the containers after they were removed, as well as how they were allegedly concealed beneath the man’s clothing.

The man said the concealed items were for his “personal use.”

When questioned about the birds, Castillo allegedly told authorities they were for his “personal use.”

He later invoked his right to remain silent, according to the complaint.

Investigators said a records check found no indication that Castillo had filed the documentation required to legally import wildlife into the United States.

He was charged with smuggling goods into the United States, according to the federal complaint.

There is no evidence, “based on the records available at the time of inspection,” that the man “submitted the documentation required for the lawful importation of wildlife,” according to the complaint.

The individual is due back in court on Oct. 26, according to the complaint.

Fox News Digital reached out to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida for further details.
