The incident took place on Monday night at around 11:12 pm at a supermarket in North Goa’s Candolim.

The Goa police on Tuesday filed a case against Maharashtra SP MLA Abu Azmi’s son, Abu Farhan Azmi, and others for causing a disturbance in a public place and disturbing the peace.

Abu Farhan Azmi, a restaurateur and entrepreneur, is the husband of Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia. His father, Abu Azmi, is the president of the Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra unit.

The incident that led to the FIR took place on Monday night at around 11:12 pm at a supermarket in North Goa’s Candolim. A heated argument broke out between Farhan Azmi and locals over how his vehicle was being driven.

During the altercation, Farhan Azmi reportedly told the other group that he was carrying a licensed firearm, Calangute police inspector Paresh Naik told the media.

The fight led to people calling the police. When officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that two groups, including Farhan Azmi’s, had been involved in a scuffle over a minor issue.

Both parties were brought to Calangute police station, where they were given the opportunity to file complaints, but both declined, according to the police statement.

Abu Farhan Azmi produced a valid arms licence, issued by the appropriate authorities, along with a permit to carry it in Goa, the statement added.

A case was registered against Abu Farhan Azmi, Zeon Fernandes, Joseph Fernandes, Sham, and others under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The development comes at a time when Farhan Azmi’s father, Abu Asim Azmi, is facing controversy over his comments praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Abu Asim’s remarks about the 17th-century emperor have sparked widespread controversy.

Abu Asim had claimed that during Aurangzeb’s reign, India’s territorial borders extended to Afghanistan and Myanmar, and the country was a global economic powerhouse. “Our GDP accounted for 24 per cent (of the world GDP)) and India was called a golden sparrow (during his regime),” he had said.

An FIR was filed on Monday against Abu Asim in neighbouring Thane, following a complaint by Lok Sabha member Naresh Mhaske, accusing him of attempting to hurt religious sentiments.

On Tuesday, the Mumbai Police initiated an investigation into the case.
