Researchers who embarked on a grueling journey to find Amelia Earhart’s missing plane have suffered a devastating setback.

Purdue University announced that the team had “found no conclusive evidence” to confirm the Taraia Object hypothesis — which suggested that wreckage from Earhart’s aircraft lay in a lagoon on the remote Pacific island of Nikumaroro.

The theory centered on the Taraia Object, a visual anomaly first spotted in satellite imagery in 2020 that researchers suspected could be wreckage of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E.

But the university said the object was “likely a collection of large trees deposited along the peninsula’s sandspit.”

The university added, “By the time the team arrived at the site, a good portion of the debris had fragmented and washed away, leaving only a single Y-shaped segment — a fraction of the anomaly’s original size observed in imagery when the Taraia Object hypothesis was developed.”

The remaining fragment’s reflective surface was caused by a “carbonate veneer,” which researchers said had made the debris appear metallic.

“Other items found by the team were similarly coated with a shiny concretized amalgam of coral sand,” the university added.

Despite the setback, Rick Pettigrew, executive director of the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and leader of the expedition, said the team “remains in great spirits and proud of what was accomplished.”

“We accomplished our goal to determine what the Taraia Object was, and we’re deeply grateful to the private donors who shared our vision and made this journey possible,” he said in a statement.

Officials added that the expedition uncovered several artifacts, including a 30-inch steel tube, that could offer clues about how debris travels through the island’s lagoon and accumulates along the Taraia Peninsula.

The discoveries will undergo further study, though officials did not report finding any artifacts conclusively linked to Earhart’s missing aircraft.

Despite the disappointing development, researchers aren’t giving up on the theory that Earhart ended up on Nikumaroro.

“While the expedition did not uncover the ‘smoking gun’ connecting Earhart to Nikumaroro, the team reiterated its collective belief in the broader castaway hypothesis,” Purdue University added.

Nikumaroro, a remote Pacific island, has become a focal point in the search for Amelia Earhart’s missing aircraft, with researchers investigating whether the famed aviator ended up there after disappearing in 1937. (Google Maps)

The famed aviator and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared while flying from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island during one of the final stretches of their journey.

Earhart was just 39 years old when she vanished, leaving behind one of aviation history’s most enduring unsolved mysteries.
