US President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters that he heard that India will drop its tariffs on US goods “substantially”, news agency PTI said in a report.
“I heard that India just a little while ago is going to be dropping its tariffs very substantially. I said, why didn’t somebody do this a long time ago? A lot of countries are going to be dropping their tariffs,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House, according to the news agency.
He dismissed concerns over US allies shifting towards China in response to the new tariffs, stating he was “not worried at all.”
“I think they might actually benefit from the tariffs. In some ways, it could help them,” he said, adding that many allies could lower their own tariffs since they had been imposing unfair trade barriers on the US for years.
He said that his administration will be announcing some “big things” over the next two days. “It is going to be something that’s going to bring a lot of wealth back to the country. Other countries are understanding it because they’ve been ripping the US for 50 years longer,” he further added.
