The Pakistan foreign office on Thursday quickly distanced itself from 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana and said Rana is a Canadian citizen.
“Tahawwur Rana has not renewed his Pakistani documents in the last two decades. His Canadian nationality is very clear,” the Pakistan foreign office said in a statement.
Rana has been extradited from the US, he was being held there since his arrest in October 2009 along with David Coleman Headley, the co-conspirator, who is being held in a separate case.
Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian businessman, is wanted in India for his alleged involvement in the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people, including security personnel and foreigners. He is accused of facilitating the coordinated strikes on India’s financial hub by conducting reconnaissance missions and providing support to David Coleman Headley.
He allegedly used his immigration services company as a front to help Headley pose as a US national while gathering intelligence in India. After years of legal battles, US courts approved his extradition to India, citing his role in the conspiracy.
The 26/11 Mumbai attacks were among the deadliest terror strikes in India’s history, causing 166 deaths and injuring hundreds. For nearly 60 hours starting November 26, 2008, 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists targeted multiple locations across the city, including the Taj Hotel, CST railway station, and the Jewish Chabad House. The attacks, orchestrated from Pakistan, sent shockwaves around the world. Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman, was tried and executed in India.
