Every year, there are plenty of great promotional giveaways across all of sports. Some are useful — I still use a towel I got at a preseason hockey game to wash my car and whack wasp nests off my house — while others just collect dust.
But none have captured the imagination quite like the Chicago White Sox’s Pope hats.
Now, Pope Leo has got one to add to his collection of Pope hats… which I imagine is quite extensive.

The team gave away thousands of Papal lids on Aug. 11 during a game in which they defeated the Cincinnati Reds (seems impossible to lose on Pope Hat Night, right?)
Of course, one of those hats needed to travel overseas to Vatican City and the man himself, and Fr. T. Becket A. Franks posted on X that it had arrived.
The MLB-flavored mitre looks pretty sharp, and while it might be a little too black to go along with the Pope’s usual ensemble, at least the team’s color scheme still works for him.
Good thing he’s not a Marlins fan or something like that.

Now, I don’t believe for one second that Pope Leo will throw that puppy on for Sunday Mass, but man, I wish he would. Not every day, but maybe before big games.

The White Sox are leading the AL Central — which already seems like divine intervention in and of itself — so maybe if they play into October, Pope Leo could light a fire under the boys by busting out his new hat.
Is that popely in the traditional sense? No, but we’re in uncharted waters with an American pope who is a big sports guy.
Wouldn’t it be wild to see a promotional White Sox Pope Hat worn by the Pope himself spawn a shocking playoff run?
