Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist and former South African skipper Shaun Pollock played in the IPL during the first few seasons of the world’s richest franchise cricket league. While Gilchrist played for two teams – Deccan Chargers and Punjab Kings – and won the IPL title as captain in 2009, Pollock played 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2008.
After their retirement from professional cricket, the two greats donned the hat of commentators and experts, and in a recent video shared by Cricbuzz on X, they picked the best-ever IPL playing XI. In their list of 11 players, they included the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, but there was no place for Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, who is the joint-most successful player in IPL history with six titles and also has close to 7000 runs to his name in 267 matches played so far.
Rohit made his IPL debut for Deccan Chargers and played three seasons (2008-2010) for them. He joined MI in the IPL 2011 mega auction and has been associated with them since then. He has won five IPL titles as Mumbai Indians captain, and in addition to that, he also has one IPL trophy as a Deccan Chargers player.
As openers, the duo agreed on the names of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli. Gayle played for three teams – KKR, RCB and PBKS – in the IPL, whereas Kohli has been associated with the Bengaluru-based franchise since the start of the cash-rich league in 2008. Former India and CSK star Suresh Raina features as No. 3 batter in the best-ever playing XI picked up by Gilchrist and Pollock, and he is followed by South African legend AB de Villiers and India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.
MS Dhoni is included as the No. 6 batter, and he will also captain the side. The duo included Sunil Narine and Ravindra Jadeja as two spin bowling all-rounders and Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah as two fast bowlers. IPL all-time leading wicket-taker Yuzvendra Chahal is the specialist spinner in Pollock and Gilchrist’s best-ever IPL playing XI.
