South Africa was cruising at 125 for 5 in 51 overs when Australian captain Pat Cummins picked up two wickets in one over to put them on the back foot in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. On the third ball of the 52nd over of South Africa’s first innings, Cummins trapped South African wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne in front of the wickets. The on-field umpire rejected Cummins’ appeal for an LBW, but he was convinced about the ball hitting the stumps and thus opted for a review.
In the replays, it was clearly visible that the ball didn’t touch Verreynne’s bat and was hitting the stumps as well. As a result, he was declared out for 13 runs from 39 balls.
After Verreynne’s dismissal, fast bowling all-rounder Marco Jansen came out to bat at No. 8 for the Proteas, but he could last only three balls and handed a simple return catch to Cummins, who made no mistake.
The wicket of Jansen on the last ball of the 52nd over was Cummins’ fourth scalp in the first innings and overall eighth in the WTC finals, which also helps him equal Mohammed Shami’s record of taking the most wickets in the WTC finals.
Before removing Verreynne and Jansen in his 16th over of the first innings, Cummins picked up Temba Bavuma’s wicket as well. The South African captain was caught by Marnus Labuschagne on the second ball of the 40th over. Before returning back to the pavilion, Bavuma faced 84 balls and, with the help of four fours and one six, scored 36 runs.
Australia out for 212
Earlier in the first innings, Australia posted a total of 212 runs after Temba Bavuma invited Pat Cummins’ men to bat first. Steve Smith scored 66 runs from 112 balls, and all-rounder Beau Webster made 72 from 92 balls. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada picked up 5 wickets for 51 runs in 15.4 overs, and Marco Jansen dismissed three Aussie batters for 49 runs in 14 overs.
Rabada is only the second bowler in WTC final history to take a five-wicket haul, and his fourth wicket of the first innings also helped him break Allan Donald’s record of 330 Test wickets for South Africa.
