Carlos Alcaraz will open his Wimbledon title defence on Centre Court on Monday, facing Italian veteran Fabio Fognini as he begins his pursuit of a third consecutive crown at the All England Club.

The 22-year-old Spaniard is aiming to join an elite group of players—Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic—as the only men to win at least three straight Wimbledon titles in the Open Era.

Currently riding a career-best 18-match winning streak, Alcaraz returns to SW19 with confidence and momentum, having triumphed over Djokovic in each of the last two Wimbledon finals.

Focused On The Present

Despite the historic implications of a potential third straight title, Alcaraz is determined to stay grounded and focused on the present challenge.

“I’m coming here thinking that I really want to win the title. I really want to lift the trophy,” Alcaraz said at a pre-tournament press conference on Saturday. “I’m not thinking about how many players have won three Wimbledons in a row.”

“I’m just thinking about being ready and preparing myself in the best way possible. Obviously, I feel a lot of confidence right now, but I’m focused on moving forward and starting the tournament.”

“Two weeks can be really long in a Grand Slam,” he added. “I’m not thinking about who I could join if I win three Wimbledons in a row.”

Alcaraz arrives in London in top form, having claimed his second straight title at Queen’s Club—a key grass-court warm-up event that reaffirmed his adaptability on the surface following a dominant clay season.

The reigning French Open champion has now captured five Grand Slam titles and looks primed for more success.

‘My Best Level’

In a dramatic Roland Garros final last month, Alcaraz came back from two sets down and saved three match points to defeat world number one Jannik Sinner, securing his fifth consecutive victory over the Italian.

That Paris triumph followed clay-court titles in Monte Carlo and Rome, solidifying Alcaraz’s status as the most in-form player on tour.

His last loss came in April at the hands of Holger Rune in the Barcelona final—since then, Alcaraz has been virtually unstoppable.

“I think the key is playing without fear,” he said. “Right now, I’m showing my best level and enjoying the game. That’s when I play my best tennis.”
