Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, fondly known as Thalapathy Vijay, will be the chief ministerial face of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the Tamil Nadu election, his party announced on Friday.
The TVK passed a special resolution adopted in the party’s executive committee meeting, naming its founder Vijay as the party’s CM candidate.
Vijay said that his party will not ally with the DMK and the BJP directly or indirectly for the 2026 Tamil Nadu polls. He added that the BJP will never grow in Tamil Nadu.
“We are not like the DMK or the AIADMK to form an alliance with the BJP for political gains because we are TVK,” he added.
As per the resolution, the party will head the alliance of parties that are not in the camps of DMK, AIADMK and the BJP.
Attacking the BJP, Vijay alleged that the ruling party at the Centre was attempting to “divide people along communal lines” for the sake of “cheap politics” and “political mileage”.
“Their mischievous act may work elsewhere, but not in Tamil Nadu,” the actor said, adding that Tamil Nadu is a land where social justice, harmony, and brotherhood are deeply rooted.
“The BJP will not succeed here by insulting Periyar, Anna, and other stalwarts of the state,” he said, as reported by Times of India.
Vijay would embark on his statewide tour from September, TVK general secretary N Anand informed.
The TVK has also proposed to hold a state conference on a large scale next month. It has also decided to hold public meetings in villages to disseminate the party’s ideology.
Who Is Thalapathy Vijay?
Vijay is one of the biggest and most influential stars in Tamil cinema (Kollywood), known for delivering numerous blockbuster films such as Ghilli, Thuppakki, Mersal, Bigil, Master, and Leo. Fondly called “Thalapathy” (Commander) by his fans, he enjoys a cult-like following, especially in Tamil Nadu, where his film releases are celebrated with grand fanfare.
Vijay, whose popularity has continued to soar with each passing decade, evolved from a romantic hero in the 1990s to a mass action superstar in the 2000s and beyond.
Vijay took the political plunge last year when he launched the TVK in February 2024. However, the TVK did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and has been working to increase its base in Tamil Nadu ahead of assembly polls.
