In a shocking turn of events, it seems like PSG and Morocco international defender Achraf Hakimi could face up to 15 years in prison, if indicted and convicted of rape, following a formal request by French prosecutors to move forward with criminal proceedings.
The case, which stems from an accusation made in early 2023, is now entering a critical phase as the final decision on whether to go to trial rests with the investigating judge.
Prosecutors Request Formal Indictment
According to Le Parisien, the Nanterre prosecutor’s office has formally requested that Hakimi be indicted before the Hauts-de-Seine departmental criminal court.
The request, signed on August 1st, follows more than a year of investigation. The move does not constitute guilt, but it signals that prosecutors believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant a trial.
The decision to indict now lies with the investigating judge, who can either uphold or reject the prosecution’s recommendations.
Allegations Date Back to February 2023
The case originates from an alleged incident on the night of February 25, 2023, at Hakimi’s residence in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb west of Paris. The alleged victim, a 24-year-old woman, reported the incident the following day at a police station in Nogent-sur-Marne, according to Le Parisien.
The woman told police she had met Hakimi in January 2023 via Instagram. On the evening of the incident, she traveled to his home in a chauffeur-driven car arranged by the player.
According to her statement, once inside the home, Hakimi allegedly began kissing her on the mouth and chest over her clothes without her consent. She claimed she protested and tried to resist, but Hakimi continued touching her inappropriately. She eventually managed to push him away with her foot and fled the scene.
In shock, she reportedly texted a friend for help. That friend later confirmed to police both her account and emotional state after the encounter.
Investigation Transferred to Nanterre Jurisdiction
The case was initially handled by the public prosecutor’s office of Créteil but was soon transferred to Nanterre, as Boulogne-Billancourt falls within the jurisdiction of the Hauts-de-Seine department. The investigation was assigned to the Sûreté territoriale, the regional criminal police.
On March 3, 2023, Hakimi was officially charged with rape by an investigating judge and placed under judicial supervision after being taken into custody. Since then, he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
PSG Response and Hakimi’s Legal Strategy
Paris Saint-Germain, Hakimi’s club since 2021, has publicly supported the player while stressing its trust in the legal process. The club cited “personal reasons” for his absence from training during sensitive periods of the investigation.
Throughout the process, Hakimi has maintained that the encounter was consensual and described the accusation as an orchestrated attempt at blackmail.
