Former FOX Sports pundit Skip Bayless had a less-than-complimentary view of Tom Brady’s color commentary abilities – coining a new nickname in the process.
Bayless was watching Brady on the mic for the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals – coincidentally being broadcast on FOX.
‘I’ve been listening to 49ers-Cardinals commentary by Capt. Obvious … who just talks and talks more and more obvious,’ Bayless said.
Brady is currently in the midst of his first season in an NFL broadcast booth – alongside play-by-play man Kevin Burkhardt as the No. 1 pairing for the network.
But he’s not been doing so without criticism – or growing pains – especially after a widely panned first week behind the microphone.
Former FOX Sports pundit Skip Bayless dropped a scathing nickname for Tom Brady
Brady, who now works for Bayless’ former employer, was branded ‘Capt. Obvious’
This isn’t even the first time that Bayless has been critical of Brady on social media – with the former ‘Undisputed’ host providing a scathing assessment of the seven-time Super Bowl winning quarterback’s abilities in mid-September.
‘I listened to Tom Brady for a whole game today, then Tony Romo for a whole game,’ Bayless wrote on X during Sunday’s NFL action.
Brady was calling the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the visiting New Orleans Saints. Afterwards Romo, a former Cowboys quarterback who now serves as a CBS Sports color commentator, called a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals from Arrowhead Stadium.
‘Romo gives you far more X&O insight and enlightenment,’ Bayless wrote. ‘Some ex QBs can see it and say it. Some can’t. Maybe Brady played more with indescribable feel and instinct. But … he’s just a booth rookie.’
While Bayless sits at home watching NFL games, Brady’s been signed to a ten-year, $375million deal to call those games.
It seems that each week is bringing more and more improvement for the ex-Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback as he gets used to being behind the mic.
Bayless has been a free agent since leaving his long-time show, Undisputed, over the summer.

‘Today was my last show on Undisputed,’ Bayless wrote on X in August. ‘I’m leaving FS1. I’ve been planning to pursue other opportunities for several months.Â
‘I had a great 8-year run with a lot of great people at FOX, but now I’m excited for what’s coming up. Stay tuned.’
Those plans have still not yet been revealed, but rumors suggest that he’s set to launch a new show with his friend and rapper Lil Wayne.
