Why has it gone viral?
Dua has more than 10 million followers on TikTok, so is used to getting millions of views on her videos, but this video seems to have captured everyone’s attention and it could be the reason it’s popping up on your FYP. TikTok’s algorithm works on numbers of interactions and popularity. So the more likes, shares, comments and views a piece of content gets, the more likely you are to see it on your own FYP.
This isn’t the first time Dua Lipa has made the headlines for her unusual food and drink combinations. Back in 2023, she was interviewed by Radio 1 Presenter Greg James about putting olive oil on vanilla ice cream. This particular video got more than 2.5M views on TikTok and had plenty of people on socials trying it out for themselves.
How do trends start on social media?
Trends emerge incredibly fast on TikTok and can shift weekly or even daily. If a celebrity jumps on a trend it can go viral pretty quickly – usually thanks to their massive fan base engaging with and sharing the content. Trends can include a whole host of topics with the most popular ones being fashion and food. The hashtag #trendingfood has more than 37,000 videos on TikTok and 128,000 posts on Instagram. Clickbait captions are also used to grab your attention and create a sense of intrigue. They entice you to watch the content and can lead to higher viewing figures.
