Siddique (66) was ambushed by three men at Kher Nagar, who have been identified as Gurmail Singh, Dharamraj Kashyap and Shiv Kumar.

The Mumbai Police said on Sunday that the third accused in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique’s murder case was apprehended from Pune, taking the total number of arrests made in the case to three.

The police said that the third arrested accused, identified as Pravin Lonkar, was allegedly one of the key conspirators who hired the shooters to carry out the attack.

Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested two out of three shooters involved in the killing of the ruling party leader and have produced them before the court. The Esplanade Court sent both the accused — Gurmail Singh and Dharamraj Kashyap — to police custody till October 21. Another shooter, Shivkumar Gautam, is absconding.

According to their plan, Singh and Kashyap were tasked with shooting the NCP leader. However, the plan changed last minute due to the huge gathering of people and police security around Baba Siddique.

Shivkumar ordered that he would carry out the attack and asked his accomplices to fire rounds and escape in case things don’t turn out in their favour, claimed sources.

Gautam, the absconding shooter, fired six rounds at the NCP leader, two of which hit the target. Siddique was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. The doctors confirmed that he had two gunshot wounds on his chest.

Main Accused Fled After Throwing Chilli Powder

The main accused, Gautam, sprayed red chilli powder on the security personnel guarding Baba Siddique to evade arrest, said the police sources. All three gunmen had carried red chilli powder with them, they added.

During police questioning, Singh and Kashyap denied knowledge of the person who ordered the killing of Baba Siddique. However, they revealed that Shivkumar Gautam had received instructions to carry out the attack.

Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and close aide of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, was shot dead by three men outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddiqui’s office in Mumbai’s Bandra on Saturday.

The political blame game has begun over the murder with opposition parties blaming the Shiv Sena – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government in Maharashtra, questioning the law and order situation in the poll-bound state.
