The coveted prize incepted by the French Football Magazine has been one of the most recognisable awards in the football calendar since the year 1956 with one journalist from each of the top-100 ranked FIFA nations voting for players. The journalists name the top 10 players through the year with points attributed for each position.
Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi stands as the most decorated player in the history of the award with an astounding eight Ballon d’Or titles in his coveted collection, including the 2023 title following a landmark campaign that saw him touch the sky with the Albiceleste during the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
The genius from Roasrio has since moved to Europe and will not be in contention for the Ballon d’Or for the first time since he debuted on the list.
Another noticeable absentee from the event will be Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five Ballon d’Or to his name, following his move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.
It will be the first time in 20 years that both players are not included in the list of players vying for the award as the upcoming edition acts as a rite of passage for the up-and-coming generation of stars.
Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, star midfielder Jude Bellingham and Manchester City stalwart Rodri are the top candidates this year.
