The comments were made by Archie Young, UK Ambassador to the General Assembly, at the UN General Assembly.
The UK on Tuesday told the United Nations General Assembly that it remains a strong supporter of UN Security Council reforms and wants to see India permanently represented at the council along with Germany, Japan, Brazil and African representation.
“We remain a strong supporter of UN Security Council Reform. The Council must be expanded, to better reflect the world today,” Archie Young, UK Ambassador to the General Assembly, at the UN General Assembly, said.
“We continue to support an expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership to a total in the mid-twenties. We want to see permanent African representation, and permanent seats for Brazil, Germany, India and Japan,” he further added.
The Starmer government representative told the world body that a reformed council reflects the current realities of today’s world.
“The Security Council’s role – and its responsibility for international peace and security – is as important now as it has ever been. The UK believes that a reformed Council, coupled with a collective, renewed commitment to the UN Charter, would strengthen the Council, so it can continue to rise to the challenges the world is facing,” he said.
India along with several other nations like Brazil, Germany, Japan and other African countries have called for a reform of the UNSC.
The UNSC currently has five permanent members: the US, the UK, China, France and Russia.
