Russian oligarch firesells his NYC penthouse as tensions between US and Moscow flare

Billionaire Russian oligarch Valery Kogan has agreed to sell his New York City penthouse amid renewed tensions between the US and Moscow

The friend of Vladimir Putin struck the deal after most recently asking $39million for the 35th-floor manse at 15 Central Park West, The New York Post reported.

The unspecified price was paid all in cash, after the co-owner of Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport and his wife, Olga, put the penthouse on the market last year for an eye-popping $65million.

Once paying $4.4million for Mariah Carey to sing at their granddaughter’s wedding, the Kogans have since sold properties in Connecticut, Tel Aviv, and Manhattan.

All of the transactions came after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and before several Russian oligarchs saw their assets seized.

The Kogans are also shopping their apartment at the prestigious Plaza hotel.

It hit the market for $50million prior to the pandemic and is now listed for only half that.

Last year, the 73-year-old Kogan and his wife sold their condo at 515 Park Ave. for $14.5million.

The Central Park West property – billed in the listing as a ‘Mansion in the Sky’ – boasts five bedrooms, a private elevator, and sweeping views of Central Park.

Other features include 13-foot ceilings, 10-foot windows, and a vantage ‘typically only seen from a helicopter.’

Nearby sits Billionaire’s Row and a slew of striking buildings.

The penthouse’s luxurious décor was made by possible by numerous renovations.

The listing states that the ‘meticulous’ renovations include imported onyx, custom inlaid wood and marble floors.

All those materials feature in the private entry foyer, which leads into a grand living room with a working fireplace.

The unit also included an oversized dining room, along with a large mahogany-walled office.

The primary suite features an inlaid marble spa bath, as well as heated floors and its own dressing room.

A large media room with a cinema-grade projector, speakers, and soundproof walls awaits the buyer, who the Post described only as ‘an older New Yorker.’

The listing agent is Adam Rothman of Douglas Elliman.

Meanwhile, tensions between Moscow and Washington continue to rise after the Biden administration gave Kyiv the green light to use longer-range American weapons against targets inside Russia.

The move appeared to anger the Kremlin, with President Putin going on to amend the country’s nuclear doctrine – lessening conditions that would prompt Moscow to order a nuclear strike.

Biden’s move put an end to a months-long prohibition geared to avoid escalating the conflict, which began in February of 2022.

The end to the appeasement appeared to align with Donald Trump’s election win, which is likely to change the country’s approach to foreign policy.

Other countries in NATO have refrained from taking that step, mostly out of fear of retaliation from Moscow.

Putin in June touted how Russia was ramping up its nuclear arsenal, which is already the world’s largest with 6,257 weapons.

The US has the second most with 5,550, beating the next-highest, China, which only has 350.

The Kremlin inherited the vast majority of the collapsed Soviet Union’s weapons of mass destruction, effectively creating a sleeping giant.

Tuesday marked the 1,000th day of the conflict, which shows no immediate signs of stopping.

As for Kogan, Forbes estimates his net worth to be somewhere around $2.5billion.

Together with billionaire business partner Dmitry Kamenshchik, he runs the biggest airport in all of Eastern Europe.

He was last seen in public the day before the invasion.
