New Agra will be developed on the agricultural land of 60 villages in the Etmadpur tehsil.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh Government has planned to build a new city named ‘New Agra’ on both sides of the 165 km Yamuna Expressway that connects Greater Noida to Agra. It will be established under the jurisdiction of Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), as a heritage city. Spread across 10,500 hectares, the New Agra will be developed on the agricultural land of 60 villages in the Etmadpur tehsil and will be divided into four key areas: industry, environment, heritage, and transportation, according to YEIDA officials. The project aims to balance modern urban development with the preservation of Agra’s historical legacy.
The authority has also prepared a blueprint for New Agra, which will be almost half the size of Noida, Uttar Pradesh. YEIDA collaborated with a consultant to develop the draft master plan, which included studies of the region’s socioeconomic and structural framework.
Talking about the project, YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh said, “Following surveys, it was determined that at least 80% of the surveyed villages are in Hathras district, leading Yeida to change the plan to include more villages from Agra district in line with the project’s name and vision. The authority will now perform on-site land verification to analyse connectivity, encroachments, and other issues before submitting its proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government for inclusion in Master Plan 2041,” quoted a report.
The New Agra project aims to make Agra a prominent tourist attraction, focussing on the city’s global appeal as the home to the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri.
Officials stated that tight emission control procedures will be imposed, particularly in the Taj Trapezium Zone, to ensure the Taj Mahal’s safety. Theme parks and entertainment zones will be established in public spaces.
Additionally, traffic and transportation problems in the region will also be addressed, with plans to build new routes, parking lots, and public transportation systems to relieve congestion on current highways.
The UP government has also planned to develop a logistics park in the Tappal-Bajna area of Aligarh and a heritage city in the Raya area of Mathura.
