Rohit Sharma missed the first Test against Australia due to the birth of his second child, and in his absence, Jasprit Bumrah led India in Perth and helped them secure a big win by 295 runs.
Rohit Sharma missed the first Test of the ongoing five-match Test series between India and Australia in Perth due to the birth of his second child. In his absence, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah led India in the series opener of the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which the visitors won by a margin of 295 runs. After India managed to secure its biggest Test win by runs in Australia under Bumrah’s captaincy, calls for Bumrah to take over the charge of India’s Test side on a permanent basis have gained momentum, and many fans on the social media platforms feel that he should lead in the second match of the series as well despite the return of Rohit.
The second Test between India and Australia is going to be a day-night affair, and the match, which is scheduled to take place at Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10, will be played with pink ball.
During the latest episode of Cricbuzz’s HeyCBwithDK show, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik was asked about his views on appointing Bumrah as captain for the pink ball Test.
While replying to the question asked by a fan, Karthik praised Bumrah by saying that he did a fabulous job, but since Rohit is designated captain and he is back, he should captain.
“Bumrah did a fabulous job, but Rohit is the designated captain, and he is back, and he should lead this Test team. Simple as that,” Karthik said.
Rohit’s captaincy was heavily criticised by fans and experts of the game after India suffered a humiliating 0-3 defeat in the three-match Test series played at home against New Zealand in October-November. Apart from his leadership, Rohit suffered a lot of criticism for his batting performances throughout the series.
The 37-year-old right-handed batter opened the innings for India in all three matches but could only manage to score 91 runs in six innings.
In his absence, KL Rahul opened for India in the first Test against Australia, and the 32-year-old right-handed batter from Karnataka scored 26 and 77 runs in the two innings of the Perth Test, which India won inside four days.
