Amitabh Kant has stepped down as the G20 Sherpa after serving in the role for three long years, he announced on Monday, June 16. In a lengthy post on social media, the former NITI Aayog CEO said he is ready to embrace “new opportunities and move forward in life” after giving 45 years to dedicated government service. He also gave a special mention to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S. Jaishankar. Amitabh Kant represented India at the G20 since 2022 and played a key role during its 2023 presidency.

“I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India for accepting my resignation as G20 Sherpa and for having given me the opportunity to drive a range of developmental initiatives and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of India. I am grateful to all my colleagues, peers, and friends for their patience, understanding, and support,” he wrote in the X post.

On LinkedIn, Kant spoke about his elaborate career as the NITI Aayog CEO and while leading India’s G20 Presidency. He highlighted multiple key achievements and wrote, “India’s G20 presidency was people-centric and inclusive, with meetings held across all states and union territories. This strengthened cooperative federalism, celebrated local culture, and upgraded infrastructure nationwide. As CEO of NITI Aayog, I had the privilege to lead path-breaking programs such as the Aspirational Districts Programme, which transformed the lives of common citizens in 115 of India’s most underdeveloped districts.”

Kant also opened up about serving as the Secretary of the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion, adding that he focused on reform and liberalisation.

From starting his journey in Kerala, where he learned the value of grassroots development, to making it to the Ministry of Tourism, Kant also played a major role in the Incredible India campaign. With that said, the former G20 Sherpa now looks forward to taking the lead in India’s transformational journey towards Viksit Bharat by supporting free enterprise, startups, think tanks, and academic institutions. However, details about his next role are yet to be unveiled.

A retired 1980-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, Amitabh Kant, was appointed as India’s G20 Sherpa in July 2022 and has also been a part of the Centre’s promising initiatives like Make in India, Startup India, and Ease of Doing Business. Kant also served as chairman and CEO of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) from 2009 to 2014.
