A Scoop of Summer: Why Ice Cream Is More Than Just a Seasonal Treat

Last Updated:

Ice cream isn’t just a summer treat—it’s a nostalgic, feel-good ritual that brings joy, comfort, and refreshment in every scoop.

Whether it’s a swirl of gelato, a stick of kulfi, or a classic scoop of vanilla, ice cream continues to be the universal language of summer

As temperatures rise and the sun blazes down across the country, few things bring instant joy quite like a scoop of ice cream. But beyond its obvious cooling effect, ice cream holds a deeper emotional resonance for Indian consumers — a blend of nostalgia, comfort, indulgence, and even nutrition. Industry leaders agree: this frozen treat is not just a dessert, it’s an experience.

“Ice cream is more than just a treat — it’s a ritual that signals the arrival of summer,” says Rathnam, CEO of Milky Mist Dairy Foods Pvt. Ltd. “It’s that first scoop on a sunny afternoon, the way it brings people together, and the comfort it offers with each bite. Ice cream has a unique ability to evoke memories — of childhood, of family gatherings, of moments shared with friends.”

This emotional connection is precisely why ice cream consumption surges during summer, creating opportunities for brands to innovate and delight. Rathnam also highlights that ice cream, particularly when made with real dairy, offers nutritional benefits like protein and calcium — making it a more balanced indulgence. “It’s a moment of joy, refreshment, and nourishment wrapped in one,” he adds.

Echoing the sentiment, Mohit Khattar, CEO, Graviss Foods Pvt. Ltd. (Baskin Robbins), emphasizes the multi-sensory pleasure ice cream provides. “It can cool, refresh and make one happy, all at the same time due to a combination of factors including the release of neurotransmitters and positive memory associations,” he explains. According to Khattar, the cold, creamy texture and sweet flavor of ice cream naturally trigger dopamine and serotonin — the “feel-good” hormones. This makes each bite more than a taste—it becomes an uplifting experience.

To cater to this emotional and sensory appeal, Baskin Robbins has expanded its summer portfolio. “This year, we’ve introduced Italian Gelato ice creams and Sundaes, a new range of fairytale sundaes for kids, and targeted snacking products. All stay true to international quality while bringing global flavors to Indian consumers,” says Khattar.

At Mother Dairy, the focus is on balancing innovation with tradition. “Ice creams naturally take center stage — offering a refreshing escape and a nostalgic bite of happiness,” says Manish Bandlish, Managing Director. With the early onset of summer, the brand is ready to meet surging demand and has launched about 15 new ice cream products, including premium kulfis, impulse treats, and indulgent tubs. “We’ve also rolled out our coolest summer campaign in NCR, with a vibrant, modern vibe that showcases our new flavours,” Bandlish adds.

Whether it’s a swirl of gelato, a stick of kulfi, or a classic scoop of vanilla, ice cream continues to be the universal language of summer. With innovations in flavour, form, and function, and a nod to the emotional roots it touches, ice cream this season isn’t just about beating the heat — it’s about embracing the joy.
