Scott Carson to leave Manchester City (X)
Scott Carson will depart Manchester City upon the expiry of his contract this summer. The 37-year-old has been with the club since 2019, serving as a valuable member of the goalkeeping team.
Carson initially joined on loan and subsequently signed a permanent deal in the summer of 2021.
The experienced goalkeeper made his City debut in the May 2021 victory against Newcastle United and made a second appearance in the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Sporting CP during the 2021/22 season.
He has been part of a squad that has secured 12 major honours over the last six seasons, a period of historic success for Pep Guardiola’s team.
“Carson made his first senior appearance for Leeds United in January 2004 and has enjoyed an impressive 21-year professional career. During his time at City, he has been commended by goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor and fellow goalkeepers Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno for his work ethic and positive influence within the group. Everyone at Manchester City would like to thank Scott for his hard work and dedication and wish him the very best for the future,” the club stated.
Reports suggest that Carson’s departure will facilitate a move for Marcus Bettinelli, Chelsea’s third-choice goalkeeper. Bettinelli, 31, has made only one appearance for Chelsea, in an FA Cup match against Chesterfield in 2022. He also meets the homegrown criteria, which makes a potential transfer to City more likely.
Guardiola’s side is active in the transfer market during a 10-day period that allows clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup to adjust their squads, ending on Tuesday. City will begin this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in Group G, facing Moroccan side Wydad, Abu Dhabi-based Al Ain, and Italian giants Juventus to compete for a place in the knockout stages.
