Barcelona Femeni star Alexia Putellas has eclipsed a club legend to reach a landmark milestone. One of the best women footballers in the world, the 30-year-old Spaniard has been a top performer for Barcelona in recent years. She continues to cement her status as one of the club’s greatest-ever icons, with her latest achievement strengthening it.

Alexia has now surpassed Barcelona legend Luis Suarez to become the third-highest goal scorer in Blaugrana history. The two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner scored her 199th goal against Real Madrid Femenino to pull clear of the legendary Uruguay striker, who found the net 198 times for the Catalan side.

Putellas achieved the landmark milestone on Sunday, November 17. Barcelona were leading their arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-0 at halftime during the Primera Division clash. Patricia Guijarro had scored an early 18-minute brace before Claudia Pina added the Blaugrana side’s third. Alexia put the cherry on top in the second half, scoring her 199th club goal to make the score 4-0. The win also sealed three crucial points for Barcelona at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

Now, Alexia Putellas will focus on reaching the double-century figures at the club before attempting to chase down Cesar Rodriguez’s haul of 232 goals. While the 30-year-old forward has been in brilliant form, even her club has admitted that closing in on Lionel Messi’s all-time tally of goals will likely be a near-impossible task. “Getting anywhere near the 672 goals that Leo Messi scored is a tad more difficult. Not just for her, but anyone!” read Barcelona’s official statement.

Barcelona fans witnessed Alexia Putellas’ first goal for the club in the 2012/13 season. She scored her magic 100th in April 2019 against Madrid CFF. She overtook Jenni Hermoso’s tally of 181 club goals to become the women’s team’s highest-ever scorer last season against Atletico Madrid. Apart from the individual numbers, Alexia has won several titles in Spain. In her career, spanning more than a decade, she has secured eight Primera Division and three Women’s Champions League titles.

Putellas will likely lead Barcelona in their upcoming Women’s Champions League clash against St. Polten. The match will take place on November 22 at the Generali Arena. Barcelona are currently in second place with six points from three matches. A win on Friday will see them go level on points with Premier League giants Manchester City WFC.
