It was a Women’s Premier League (WPL) debut to remember for the Indian U19 Women’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper, Niki Prasad who held her nerve to help the Delhi Capitals take the win against Mumbai Indians in what ended up being one of the most thrilling contests in the tournament’s history.
Hardly having much of a contribution with the bat during the ICC tournament, Prasad’s inclusion put her in the spotlight as the Capitals had yet another U19 star in their ranks. Like the others, she also showed signs of having something special.
Coming in the ninth over with DC at 76/4 with 89 runs needed of around 11 overs, it looked like MI were taking the game by the scruff of the neck. Despite Prasad’s inexperience in the big leagues, she certainly looked like she held her own as the youngster looked to make a strong impression.
“This is the first game for me in WPL and all I wanted to do was go out there and express myself. I did visualize before the game and I knew what I had to do and that is what I did,” Prasad explained in the post-match presentation ceremony after being adjudged the Player of the Match.
Her explanation showed her impressive thinking of the game where she looked to take a rather risk-free approach by keeping the scoreboard ticking with singles along with the odd boundary against the bad ball.
“The situation we were in, singles weren’t enough and all I wanted to do with those singles was some calculative boundaries as well. Motivated to go out there and give my best,” she concluded.
Nonetheless, the Capitals may have gotten a win by playing one of the most contested matches in the tournament’s history and Niki Prasad may have a big role to play in the future as well with the Capitals. Her ability to calmly assess the situation in the middle-order could be one the franchise banks on in the remainder of the season which could allow their opening pair to go all-out in the powerplay and let Prasad and the other batters take them to the win.
With the first win on the board, the Capitals will now look forward to playing the title-holders, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Vadodara on February 17 (Monday).
