India has the “fastest-growing developer population on the planet”, Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, has said. Sharing numbers on X (formerly Twitter) to corroborate his claims, Dohmke suggested that “India’s rise as a global tech titan is inexorable”.
He added, “India’s developers have gone a leap further: they’re increasingly using AI to build AI. India has the second-highest number of contributors to public generative AI projects.”
The graph shows the United States leading, followed by India, Hong Kong, China, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada, and France.

Earlier, the world’s leading developer platform announced there are more than 15.4 million developers in India building on GitHub, with a 33% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth. By 2027 India is likely to surpass the United States to become the largest developer community on GitHub.
Dohmke stressed that developers are already more productive thanks to the integration of AI tools like GitHub Copilot. Take, for example, developers who have been clocking in 55% faster coding tasks with Copilot, and that’s just the beginning of how AI is changing software development in general. This acceleration in development not only brings about economic growth but also promotes an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship in India, he stated.
He was addressing technology leaders at GitHub Galaxy Bengaluru.
“Where software developers are, economic growth follows,” Dohmke was quoted by Business Standard saying.
The global AI market could grow at approximately 25% to 35% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to between $320 billion and $380 billion by 2027, according to projections.
The IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023 reveals that Indian enterprises are the highest adopters of AI — 59% are actively using it. This reflects a growing trend, with 74% of organizations increasing their investments in AI over the past two years, especially for R&D and workforce reskilling.
IBM’s report said a key bottleneck to enterprises successfully incorporating AI is a lack of AI skills.
To foster research and development in AI, the Indian government has taken initiatives like the National AI Strategy and National AI Portal. Supporting these funds is an investment in AI infrastructure, education and a skilled workforce preparing to meet the demands of industry.
As per a Deloitte survey, 93% of students and 83% of employees are actively using generative AI in India, said to be the leading in the Asia Pacific region for generative AI adoption.
Responding to the GitHub CEO, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on X, “When it comes to innovation and technology, Indian youth are among the best!”
