Apple is rumoured to be launching AirPods with small infrared cameras, enhanced audio and health monitoring features. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says the prospect of AirPods with cameras could be linked to Apple’s certain AI evolution in the next few years. The report says the cameras would act like infrared sensors to work with other Apple products.
Cameras On AirPods: Nothing New
The idea about AirPods with cameras is not completely novel. According to MacRumor, Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple supply chain expert, stated in a blog post last year that the Cupertino-based tech company could mass-produce redesigned AirPods with infrared cameras by 2026.
Kuo also claimed the Vision Pro headset would offer a better spatial audio experience when paired with new AirPods that have infrared cameras. “For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing these new AirPods, if users turn their heads to look in a specific direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasised to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience,” Kuo wrote in his blog post.
The analyst also suggested the infrared cameras may also make it possible for in-air gesture control to be implemented, which would enable hand gestures to interface with devices. The 2026 or 2027 release of the redesigned AirPods with infrared cameras is possible if the production schedule for 2026 proceeds as anticipated.
Gurman has also talked about plans for Apple Watch models with integrated cameras that will be available by 2027. He predicted that a future model of the Apple Watch Series would probably include a camera in the screen area. He anticipated the camera on the right side of the watch, next to the Digital Crown for the Watch Ultra variant in the foreseeable future.
However, he further points out that these cameras are meant to enable Visual Intelligence, a function that was first introduced on the iPhone 16 last year and was most recently added to the iPhone 15 Pro models running iOS 18.4 version.
