The next iPad Air and other Mac products could finally be upgraded to a higher display technology which their price tag warrant.
Apple is expected to bring the M3-powered iPad Air early next year
The iPad Pro models have featured ProMotion display technology which brings adaptive 120Hz refresh rate to the lineup. But the regular and the Air iPad series have been deprived of this feature for years. And it could change as early as 2025, with reports talking about Apple’s plans to develop a 90Hz display tech to run on the iPad Air, and the iMac screens.
The source for the update isn’t very credible but Bloomberg has earlier talked about Apple’s plans to bring a new iPad Air model in early 2025. So, the two could probably add up to give us a more exciting outlook to this development. It is funny that Apple continues to adopt the standard 60Hz displays for the iPads, iMac and even the costlier Studio Display lineup. The high refresh rate screens have become a must-have in most cases, except for Apple’s insistence on keeping it for the Pro’s only.
Even the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come with the standard Retina display which feels less fluid compared to the 16 Pro models. Bringing the 90Hz display feels inevitable but we would prefer to see Apple adopt the existing ProMotion tech for all its products, which might happen with the iPhone 17 lineup that comes out next year.
Apple already has the tools that can work on other products whose name doesn’t have the term ‘Pro’ so why develop a new display tech. Having said that, the company might want to keep some features limited to the Pro models, and offering a 90Hz display is likely to help with keeping the cost of the product lower than its peers.
We’ll probably hear more on this in the coming weeks, and also the new iPhone SE 4 model that could help Apple really push its AI services to a wider audience from next year.
