Apple Slams Meta’s Privacy Demands As EU Looks To Open iOS For More Apps

Last Updated:

Apple and Meta are going at each other once again, as both the tech companies look to make their point with the new stringent EU tech rules.

Apple needs to open iOS to more apps in EU but it is not happy with Meta’s demands

Apple is facing more trouble in the European Union and Meta is heavily involved in its troubles. The company is being forced to open iOS to more developers and third-party access which Meta wants to benefit from in the region. But Apple is not clearly pleased with Meta’s demands, as it wants to access the phone calls, photos and more of the iPhone users in the EU regions.

The company feels that allowing apps like Instagram and Facebook to access calls could leave them vulnerable to privacy risks. Apple has been vocal about Meta’s privacy issues and how it violates user privacy for its own returns.

But the iPhone maker has warned other users that the requests made by Meta in the EU region could leave their device vulnerable to hacking and other intrusions which is not ideal. Apple’s report says it fears Meta’s apps would be able to read messages, track your app usage and even scan photos, if it agrees to the demands of the social media giant.

Meta has understandably denied those claims, and pointed out that Apple is looking for an excuse to block interoperability on iOS and using privacy to defend its case. Well, to be honest, Meta doesn’t have a good record with privacy of users, and Apple has cheekily mentioned its fines in Europe over the same matter previously.

The EU regulators are clearly looking to unlock Apple’s walled garden but they have to make sure these changes don’t come at the cost of the consumers. This isn’t the first time when Apple and Meta are at loggerheads over their practices. Meta has been accused of using data from the iPhone users to push its digital advertising business. At the same time, Meta claims Apple’s stringent iOS and App Store policies have made it hard for users to enjoy best of its services.
