Apple Vision Pro caters to the premium segment but the affordable version is likely to cut some corners which means you will need a device to power the headset.

The affordable Vision Pro headset could see some major changes.

Apple continues to be at the centre of speculation surrounding the next iteration of its Vision Pro headset. The first-generation device, released in 2024, remains the only model currently on the market.

Since its launch, reports have hinted at Apple’s efforts to develop a more affordable version of the headset, though concrete details remain scarce. Adding to the intrigue, there’s also buzz about Apple exploring AR glasses — similar in style to Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration.

Now, fresh insights have surfaced, offering the most concrete glimpse yet into Apple’s roadmap. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, Apple is actively working on two new versions of the Vision Pro.

One of the upcoming models is expected to be a lighter and more affordable version of the existing Vision Pro. The original model priced at $3,299 (Rs 3,00,000 approx), faced criticism over its high cost and weight.

Despite launching the Vision Pro in major markets such as the US, UK, China, and Japan, Apple did not launch it the headset in India. The steep price tag proved to be a barrier for many potential buyers, and reports indicate that some who did invest in the device ultimately returned it, citing dissatisfaction. These challenges have reportedly prompted Apple to reassess its strategy for the Vision Pro line-up moving forward.

Nevertheless, after committing billions of dollars to the platform, Apple has decided to forge ahead rather than abandon the project. According to Gurman, the company is now working on two new models — one with enhanced performance, reduced weight, and a lower price, addressing the key criticisms of the original device.

He also reveals that Apple is working on a wired Vision Pro-style headset that connects directly to a Mac. Unlike previous transparent lens concepts, this model maintains the immersive, enclosed design of the original Vision Pro but focuses on ultra-low latency—making it particularly suitable for professional applications like surgical imaging and flight simulation, where responsiveness is crucial.

One of the main complaints has been the headset’s weight. The Vision Pro weighs around 650 grams, and with the external battery included, the total approaches 1 kg, making prolonged use uncomfortable for many users. In response, Apple began selling additional support straps, indirectly acknowledging the issue.

Initially, Apple had only considered modest updates to the current Vision Pro, such as swapping the M2 chip for the upcoming M5. However, current plans indicate a more ambitious redesign—one that includes significant improvements in both performance and form factor.
