Wooden furniture must be properly maintained; otherwise, it can fall victim to termite infestation and become irreparably damaged. The problem tends to worsen during summer, as termites thrive in hot and humid conditions. They consume wooden items from the inside out, making early detection difficult.
While the outer surface of the wood often remains intact, the interior may be completely damaged by termites; hence, the damage usually becomes apparent only after it is done.
How To Identify And Prevent Termite Problem?
Termites typically inhabit dark, enclosed areas. From the outside, their activity on wood may be invisible. However, signs such as mud tubes on walls and clusters of discarded wings can indicate their presence. Termites build these mud tubes to travel between their nests and other areas within the house, using them as pathways.
To detect hidden infestations, wooden items should be tapped frequently. Termites hollow out the inside of the wood while leaving the surface or paint layer untouched. If there is a hollow sound when tapped, this could indicate internal damage.
If you notice a significant number of insect wings near windows or doors, it is also a warning sign. Once termites find a mate, they shed their wings before reproduction, signalling that a colony is expanding.
What To Do If You Detect Termites?
Once termite activity is confirmed, insecticides should be used. Typically, a liquid chemical is sprayed around the soil surrounding the home to control their spread. However, there are also eco-friendly alternatives to consider:
Orange Oil: Contains d-limonene, which is toxic to termites.
Vinegar Solution: Acts as a natural insecticide. Mix vinegar with water and spray it onto wooden surfaces.
Borax Powder: Combine one teaspoon of borax powder with 250 ml of warm water and spray onto affected areas.
Sunlight Exposure: Place termite-infested furniture in direct sunlight for at least three days as termites cannot survive extreme heat.
It is always better to prevent termite infestations before they begin. Termites are drawn to moisture, so ensure your home and furniture remain dry. Wipe down surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and avoid any dampness, particularly on wooden furniture. Inspect furniture routinely, especially in summer, and consider applying anti-termite wood polish in advance to safeguard it.
