Once a strong Ukraine ally, Argentinian President Javier Milei appears to have deleted all photos posing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from his social media accounts after the latter’s unprecedented spat with US President Donald Trump in the White House last week.

Javier Milei, a strong supporter of Trump, has refused to offer any explanation for his decision, but it is widely interpreted as a consequence of nosediving US-Ukraine relations after Trump berated Zelenskyy in an extraordinarily heated clash in the Oval Office.

Milei was once a strong supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia. During after his swearing-in event in December last year, Milei warmly embraced the Ukrainian leader, who was on his first trip to Latin America since Moscow’s invasion, and said, “You will always find me on the right side of history.”

Zelenskyy and Milei have regularly shared photo-ops and phone calls, including the 2025 World Economic Forum. However, a strain began to develop between the two leaders after Argentina abstained from supporting a UN resolution calling for Russia’s immediate withdrawal from Ukrainian territories.

The United States was among the 18 countries who voted against the resolution that also included Belarus, North Korea and Sudan. Argentina’s abstention sparked controversy as some within his ranks criticised his abrupt shift in foreign policy, as per reports.

Zelenskyy Expresses ‘Regret’ Over Spat With Trump

In a significant development, Zelenskyy on Tuesday expressed regret over his recent clash with US President Donald Trump at the White House, admitting that the meeting “did not go the way it was supposed to.” This came after the US halted military aid to Ukraine as Trump criticised Zelenskyy’s latest stance that peace with Russia was “very, very far away”.

In his first statement since Trump halted US military aid to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said that he hopes to “make things right” and stressed his desire for “future cooperation and communication to be constructive.”

“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” the Ukrainian President wrote in a post on X.

Notably, Trump recently emphasised on Russia-Ukraine peace deal, suggesting that those who are unwilling to negotiate won’t last long. He also expressed that Russia is willing to reach an agreement.

After Zelenskyy said that a deal to end the war between Ukraine and Russia “is still very, very far away“, Trump called it the worst statement the Ukrainian leader could have made, adding that America would not tolerate it much longer.

Last week, Zelenskyy faced an unprecedented dressing down in front of the global media during talks with Trump and US Vice President JD Vance in the White House. While Vice-President JD Vance accused Zelenskyy of being disrespectful, President Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart that he was “gambling with World War Three”.
