Liverpool manager Arne Slot paid an honourable tribute to the team’s former coach Jurgen Klopp after their Premier League triumph. The Reds thumped Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 on Sunday, April 27, to win the title after five years. In a post-match interview, Slot was reminded of how Klopp had announced him as the new manager at the same place in 2024.
When questioned about how he felt after finishing first in the English top-flight, Slot said, “It feels great. I don’t think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp.”
Slot then sang Klopp’s name to the tune of ‘Live is Life’ by Opus in front of a packed crowd at Anfield.
Klopp made a shocking announcement on January 26 last year, revealing the 2023-24 season would be his last at Liverpool. The German manager claimed he was running out of energy and couldn’t continue performing the high-pressure role.
During his farewell in 2024, Klopp ensured he introduced Liverpool fans to the club’s new manager, Arne Slot. He did so by signing the Dutch coach’s name at Anfield.
Slot also revealed how he was already expecting a message from Jurgen Klopp about their Premier League triumph.
“I am 99.9% sure that if I pick up my phone, there will be a message from Jurgen. So many moments in the season, the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me,” Slot said while speaking to BBC.
Not many expected Slot to oversee a successful title charge in his maiden season at Anfield. He had huge shoes to fill as Klopp had led the Reds to the Premier League and Champions League glory as coach.
Even Slot himself had little belief in winning the league in his first campaign in England.
“When the season started, we would have been happy with the top four. But I don’t think that is fair on the players as they are much better than that and they have shown it this season,” Slot told Sky Sports.
The Liverpool boss will hope to win this season’s remaining matches after paying tribute to the man who played his part in laying the foundation for his success. Liverpool will next play Chelsea in the Premier League on May 4.
