On the other side of North London, though, Spurs will be rejoicing over their first piece of European silverware after a decades-long drought.

To the dismay and annoyance of Manchester United fans, Tottenham Hotspur achieved the unthinkable last night in Bilbao, winning a major trophy after 17 long years.

While the Old Trafford faithful grapple with the utter disappointment (which was long overdue, given their dismal outings and internal conflict throughout the season), another fanbase is likely equally annoyed: the Gunners of Arsenal.

The North London rivals have a long history of clashes, and now, in the ultimate insult to the Gunners, the biggest running joke in modern Premier League history was shattered last night when Postecoglou’s men secured long-awaited silverware.

Adding salt to the wound, their beloved Mikel Arteta has failed to bring in any silverware over the past five years, while Spurs – despite their abysmal Premier League season – have reaped the rewards.

So rises the inevitable question: who amongst the two sides had a better season?

It seems Mikel Arteta took inspiration from Jose Mourinho, preferring not to speak about it, stating that he ‘doesn’t like to compare to other teams’.

Ahead of Arsenal’s final Premier League fixture of the season against Southampton on Sunday, Arteta swiftly avoided answering when asked about who had the better season.

“Sorry, I don’t like to compare to other teams,” Arteta stated bluntly.

“I need to analyse my own team. That’s my job.”

It was an understandable reaction from Arteta, who again failed to compete for the Premier League and suffered a disappointing UEFA Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of a spirited PSG.

On the other side of North London, Spurs will be rejoicing over their first piece of European silverware after a decades-long drought.

Ange Postecoglou’s early-season promise – “I always win things in my second year” – shall reverberate through the hallowed halls of the club for eternity.

Meanwhile, United will be staring at a potential complete overhaul and rebuild, as the once-glorious bastion of English football tries to recover after plunging to the ultimate depths of misery this past season.
